This is a Public Advisory Notice to let you know that all memory loss is not Alzheimer’s disease. There are a couple of other considerations you need to be aware of in the information age.
- Memory loss can be multi-factorial.
- Depression and Stress can lead to what is called “pseudo dementia.”
- Dietary deficits, such as B-12 and folate, can lead to memory loss. (Eat those green and leafy vegetables).
- Medication side-effects can cause disorganized thinking and memory loss.
- Lack of sleep can cause temporary memory loss.
- As we get older there can be some just normal progression of short-term memory deficits.
So, before you get too alarmed, consider what we in the field call, the differential diagnosis. After you have done your own self-diagnosis, seek out help from a licensed professional. You can start by having your physician perform a Folstein Examination (MMSE=Mini-Mental Status Examination).
However, if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, your urgency and prognosis is much different. Although not a death sentence, you need to quickly seek out Diagnostic clarification. There are currently a number of FDA approved treatments for this disorder, so find the closest Neurologist or Psychiatrist to help you with this medical problem.
