There are some basic signs/symptoms to look for to determine depression. The diagnostic criteria for Major Depression:
Sleep Disturbances (too much or too little)
Interest, as in the lack of interest in activities normally enjoyed (Also known as anhedonia).
Guilty Feelings (a feeling of hopelessness usually accompanies the guilt)
Energy, or lack of energy, known to professionals as Anergia
Concentration Difficulties (not related to ADD)
Appetite Disturbances (too much or too little)
Psychomotor Difficulty (retardation or agitation)
Suicidality*
In order to make the understanding of depression clear and concise, I have decided to present this disease in new fashion. This series will break down the different severities of depression in 3 parts.
Color I: Natural
The natural color of depression involves a person that is sad, lethargic, and isolative. However, it is important to remember that in order to meet the criteria for a Major Depressive Episode, they have to experience at least five (5) of the above symptoms AND exhibit low mood and/or lack of interest in all activities continuously for a two week period.
Flavor I: Bland
The dull flavor of depression is exhibited by a person who has no interest in forming relationships and/or continuing in a relationship. Decreased libido, in my practice, is one of the more common complaints accompanying depression.
