If you are like me, I am sure that you are tired of people calling every young man or young woman with a series of temper outbursts automatically Bipolar Disorder. Well, the DSM-5 Task Force has decided to take a closer look at the constellation of several symptoms that may look like this disorder, but are actually not the dreaded disorder of Bipolar Illness. Now don’t get me wrong, we certainly have novel and great treatment paradigms for Bipolar but the stigma of the possibility of having a mental illness, especially Bipolar or Schizophrenia, may run some people away from seeking out the help of a psychiatrists for their child.

The new disorder found in DSM-5 is called “Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder.” (296.99/F24.8) After reading the newly released diagnostic criteria, I can certainly appreciate the work that my colleagues have done to bring light to a set of behaviors that we see in young men and women before the age of 18. It is also important to note that this diagnosis should not be documented initially before the age of 6 years old. There are certainly other considerations but not this diagnosis is particular. The team also noted that the diagnosis, should not be something new after the age of 18 years old. After 18, I personally would start looking at one of the other mood disorders.

I really like what I am seeing in out new manuel. It is seemingly going to require more expertise and reading from those that use it regularly. We can no longer just tag diagnostic criteria on a child without the appropriate work-up and clinical data from collateral sources.

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder Diagnostic Criteria (Taken from DSM-5; Copyright the American Psychiatric Association 2013)

A. Severe recurrrent temper outbursts manifested verbally and or behaviorally that are grossly out of proportion in intensity to the situation or provocation.

B. The temper outbursts are inconsistent with developmental level.

C. The temper outburst occur, on average, 3 or more times a week.

D. The mood between outbursts is persistently irritable or angry most of the day, nearly every day, and is observable by parents, teachers and peers.

E. Criteria A have been present for 12 or more months. Throughout that time, the individual has not had a period lasting 3 or more consecutive months without all of the symptoms.

F. Criteria A and D are present in a t least 2 of 3 settings and are severe in a least one of these.

G. The diagnosis should not be made for the first time before age 6 years or after the age of 18 years.

H. By history or observation, the age at onset of Criteria A-E is before 10 years.

I. There has never been a distinct period lasting more that 1 day during which the full symptom criteria, except duration, for a manic or hypomanic episode have been met.

J. The behaviors do not occur exclusively during an episode of major depressive disorder and are not better explained by another mental disorder.

K. The symptoms are not caused by the physiological effects of a substance or caused by another medical or neurological condition.

Now fell free to peruse the blog for DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Bipolar Illness. However, be reminded that DSM-5 is new and there will certainly be more articles to come updating you on any changes, deletions or additions to our current classification system.

Once again stay tuned and hang-out on the blog and check at some more articles, including the latest update on the Diagnosis ADHD in Adults.

Thanks for stopping by,

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of civil rights-era leader Malcolm X who died Thursday in Mexico City. The suspects, who work at a bar Shabazz visited, face charges of homicide and robbery. According to recent media reports Malcolm Shabazz was beaten to death in Mexico City, Mexico. He died from the injuries on the way to the hospital. The robbers attempted to Rob him and he resisted so they beat him. Malcolm Shabazz was the son of the second daughter of Malcolm X. You may remember him in the news when he was a child. He was arrested and plead guilty to arson in June of 1997. He was about 13 years old at the time of the incident. He set his grandmother Betty Shabazz apartment on fire while she was sleep. She suffered from extreme burns and after 3 weeks of staying in the intensive care unit in a hospital in Yonkers, NY she died at the age of 63. Malcolm Shabazz was convicted and sentenced to 18 mos in a Juvenile Detention Center. Throughout his life he would continue to have legal issues. Convictions ranging from destruction of property to robbery.

Terrie M. Williams, a Mount Vernon native who now runs the Terrie Williams Agency in New York City, has worked closely with the Shabazz family and confirmed the man’s death via Twitter.

According to his blog, which was last updated on May 2, Shabazz had been traveling the United States and elsewhere, speaking about the “struggles that confront this generation.” According to the site, which features a number of personal photographs, Shabazz also was working on a book.

Shabazz, also according to his blog, had not completely steered clear of law enforcement, even in his later years. As recently as February, he had run-ins with an FBI counter-terrorism unit, which, he claimed, had been investigating him for some time.

Malcolm felt he was under investigation by the FBI. He felt like he was being harassed as he stated in a recent blog post on his blog site http://malcolmshabazz.blogspot.com/ Click to read more as he goes into details.

Ladies, you ever catch your man in a lie? Or suspect some foul play after hours? If you ask him a direct question and he fumbles for the answer, he purposefully avoids eye content when talking to you or his timeline doesn’t match up, look out for a growing nose on his face because it will appear any second with the fountain of lies he’s currently drowning in. Check out my top ten lies from least to greatest, that men tell from little white lies to those unbelievably fabricated stories he’s made up to throw you off track.

10. She is my sister.

Ladies you have to question a man that has a whole lot of God-Sisters and Play Sisters. This is an old but nasty trick. Sister can mean a whole lot of things including a bedtime partner, if you know what I mean. The next time he tries that, ask him to see some family portraits.

9. That’s just my “baby mama.” What does that really mean? You might just be a fool if you allow your man to keep going over there for extended periods of time to see his child. Yes, you want him to have a relationship with his children, but probably NOT with his baby’s momma. Old ties never die and don’t you forget it!

8. I went to church last night. Unless he is sanctified that is usually a lie. Truth be told most holiness churches have stopped having multiple services during the week. It could be because of the recession. Gas and light is sort of high. Don’t let the devil fool you. Invite yourself to Bible Study with him one night. How bout it!

7. I did not have any gas to come over yesterday. If he can get to work, he can get his sorry you-know-what over to your house to change your oil. Listen for some of those excuses that just don’t make sense. He may be just using you for an occasional booty-call. What is worse you may just be doing the same. Require commitment and loyalty.

6. I laid down and when I woke-up it was just too late. We really like telling this lie. I was oh so tired. I just couldn’t make it out of bed. I woke-up this morning with my work clothes on from last night. If this is true-he probably stinks and let him stay at home. Otherwise, tell that brother to wake-up and take you out to dinner.

5. I had to do overtime. If he is doing overtime, make sure that he spends some of that money on you. Drive-by his job if it will decrease your anxiety. However, you must be prepared if his car is not in THAT parking lot. Overtime should equal more cash flow to you! How bout it!

4. I am NOT gay! If he gets too defensive when you ask this question-be convinced. Ladies most of you know a brother that loves other brothers. You cannot change him. You can try, but it may be pretty hard. If you decide to move forward with the relationship don’t be surprised we he can’t function sexually. You knew what he liked before you married. Can a leopard change his spots? Only if he truly wants too.

3. I LOVE You. If these words come out too early be AWARE! People can play on your emotions if you are NOT careful. To love you, I must know you. Enough said!

2. I had to do something for my mother/sister.O.K.? What did you have to do? Start your interrogatories. If you let him get away with one lie, he will continue throughout the relationship. Stop it early.

1. I ain’t lying!-If he has to say it, he most probably is, enough said.

Now you really need to get my ebook, “Am I in a Bad Relationship?” I am sure that it will be helpful. Just click on the link to go to the landing page.

Is this list complete? Did I leave out some of your favorites? Which one do you think is most popular? Does your boyfriend tell lies? Let me hear from you? Brothers keep your hats on, The Top Ten Lies Women Tell is on the way!

“You can’t say I don’t love you
Just because I cheat on you
Cuz you can’t see all I do
To keep you from knowing the things I do
Like erase my phone
And keep it out of town
I keep it strapped up when I sleep around
Well I should have known one day you’d find out
But you can’t go and leave me now”

Above are the lyrics from John Legend’s song entitled “Number One” featuring Kanye West. The song goes into depth about the authors promiscuous behavior and how his lover can not leave in spite of everything he has done. I am not going to point any fingers but this sounds very familiar and close to home. John Legend who is engaged to marry Chrissy, famous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, is in for a rude awakening if the story turns out to be true. According to writers at Bossip.com, Legend was out at a Manhattan night spot and engaged in deep conversation with a table next to him. One of the young ladies in their 20′s went to the restroom and Legend proceeded after her. Witnesses stated they say Legend pull the young lady into the restroom. After only several minutes passed they made a break for it out of the restroom. Another witness states they over heard a conversation the young lady had with her girlfriend in which she stated that she had just had a make out session with Legend in the restroom.

Many people are starting to be more lenient and open when it comes to their relationships. We always hear about Jada and Will Smith in the media about their open relationship. Here is a question you may ask yourself: Does your spouse have the right to cheat?

The first time I was asked this question I was floored. It is something that most of us would probably initially respond no. However, the plot thickens in some relationships. This issue really comes up a lot in relationships. Now there are so many forms of cheating emotional, sexual and now face-booking. This sounds comical but it is so true. A lot of people settle for a piece of a mate than no mate at all. The question that comes up after one has been cheating on in a relationship is , “Am I Stupid for Going Back?” There is no quick or rationale answer to this but it is worthy of a post and discussion.

Check out this video

Let Me know what your thoughts are about infidelity and have the times change? Is cheating the new norm? Have we veered away from our good ole day traditions of monogamous relationships? Until next time, check out my new book at www.AmIinABadRelationship.com

People like to stigmatize the Black race as a minority, especially males, but this week one particular Black man and it isn’t the the president, is being praised! Cleveland, Ohio resident Charles Ramsey, is responsible for the rescue of three women who had been on missing person’s list for ten years.

CNN reported that Ramsey was in his house eating McDonalds when he heard a girl scream “like a car had hit a kid”. He ran out his house, followed the sound and found Amanda Berry, who had gone missing in 2003 just before her 17 birthday. He then helped her and her six year old child (a product of rape from the kidnapper) escape and he and Berry both called 911. This led authorities to the location where they freed the other two captives and thus solving the 10 year mystery.

Ramsey had only been living in the neighborhood for a year and said he never noticed or questioned anything suspicious about Castro, saying they even barbecued and listened to music together in the yard. Check out what Ramsey had to say about his initial thoughts on his deranged neighbor.

As reported by CNN:

He just comes out to his backyard, plays with the dogs, tinkers with his cars and motorcycles, goes back in the house. So he’s somebody you look, then look away. He’s not doing anything but the average stuff. You see what I’m saying? There’s nothing exciting about him. Well, until today.

He may not have noticed anything before, but thank good he was paying attention and reacted when he heard the screams of Berry. According to CNN, Amanda Berry, Gina Dejesus and Michele Knight all disappeared years apart but all ended up in the same place, at the bottom of their sick, demented kidnapper, Ariel Castro. Two of the girls were teenagers when they were abducted, Knight was 21.

These now women, were being held hostage in a house for ten years! What kind of neighbors were on that street? I mean, they’re alive so they had to be eating, that means groceries were coming into the house. More groceries than needed for one person living in a house alone. Kids often play in the street and in backyards and kids are curious. Mailmen come and drop mail off everyday, I’m sure Castro probably had a package or two delivered. People walk their dogs in neighborhoods all the time too and you mean to tell me that NOBODY ever questioned what was going on there? I read some where that a woman lived in a house close by for 30 years and didn’t suspect anything and that one woman’s child told her that they saw a naked woman crawling in Castro’s back yard once. FYI people, should they prove true, these are all go- aheads to call 911. Ramsey had only been there a year and he ended up solving the whole case!

“They” like to talk about us (Black people) but one thing about us, is that we can smell trouble. If it looks strange, we’re not just going to ignore it. After a years time in a neighborhood we would already have our assumptions together about who does what with who, who waves back at you when you wave to them, who has a creepy house and what neighbors seem a little “off”. I can almost guarantee you that had someone seen something or speculated, heard about or even thought about ANYTHING out of the ordinary being done by a Black man who had lived in and owned that house since 1992, this case would have been solved years ago. We know that Black folks will get the cops called on them quick, even Ramsey said “I knew something was wrong when a little, pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway.”

Charles, thank you sir for paying attention and reacting that day. You made us proud for that one. It’s not often that we get to see our men of color in the limelight for something other than a professional sport, baby-daddy drama or mishaps with the law. Job well done. Now go ahead and get yourself another Big Mac.

Well, this video is very interesting to say the least. I am hoping that you all listened to it in its entirety before making your comments. I am not quite sure of what the response will be, but I am hoping that we can start our discussion on the forum about this particular video. Do you agree with what he is saying in his remarks? Are you seeing the remarks as positive or negative? Are we as a race still sensitive when non-African-Americans attempt to dress-up the brutality of slavery?

I am of the personal opinion that sometimes we have to process through what the response will be. First, I am not totally sure of the point of his remarks but on the wrong day, I might be a little offended. I am sure that we all would agree that race-relations ain’t all that kosher in America. Many of you (African0American) readers may just be having problems on your job today. This probably wasn’t a good day to post this video collage. I am still not sure of the overall goal of his statements. Were they to affirm, inspire, or just… what? It kinda left an empty feeling in my stomach. For example, I can’t really talk about some of the ill of other races without drawing clear lines of comparison and contrast, as well as, citing specific data. I don’t think he meant to be inappropriate but it took me several listens to really get the essence of what I think he is saying. Now , I guess the problem here is that he is not a Bishop T.D. Jakes (Dallas, TX)or Bishop Paul S.Morton (Atlanta,GA). Is this what is causing me some difficulty? Why do I feel a certain kind a why? Is this an attempt to relate to our struggles, hardships and pain? Can a non-African American person do that in a short video clip without offending the masses?

I never really push for feed back or comments, but I really want to get a forum and discussion started on this post. If you would be so kind as to leave a comment or two on your response after you have listened, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do this for me this time. I never really beg for response to a post, but this time, I need to hear from several if not all readers. This video is interesting to say the least. Before you leave a comment, please take the opportunity to just listen one more time. It does indeed take a few moments to process. I must share, I am in no way trying to offend anyone of any color but I do know that certain topics, such as slavery and black-on-black crime are very sensitive. Take the opportunity to listen, process and then respond. If you would like to send a question out to the group, feel free to do so. I am still a little puzzled and again I am not sure what the goal of the speech was when he decided to lean us his hear. I am also not sure that he knew someone would record it and let it go out into the atmosphere of the ever so sensitive media and its constituents.
