Well it has been a long time coming but this morning, while at the APA meeting in San Francisco, I learned that adults can now be diagnosed (DSM-V) as having ADHD. This is a milestone for our discipline of medicine. For a long time we had removed the (H) out after an individual became and adult, but this is no longer the case. It is also important to note, that symptoms no longer have to be present by the age of 7, either. We have now changed the criteria to include individuals who may not have experienced symptoms until around middle school, the age of 12. This is very important because middle school is really the time when issues like, procrastination, losing things and failure to academically progress become more and more apparent. Also, we have to keep two things in mind as we further evaluate adults with this disorder, (A) The effort it takes them to complete a task and (2) The impact that a person’s errors has on his/her’s life.

I will still do an extensive work-up on all new patients presenting with this medical complaint, but I will now closer monitor patients for there progress. There are still a couple of hints at possible stimulant/abuse such as; (1) Reporting that you feel better rather than reporting an improved ability to focus and complete task. (2) Excessive phone-calls and or concerns about the possibility of missing a dose. (3) Pushing me for an increase dosage when not really indicated and (4) Physician gut. Sometimes you can pick-up on patients that may be abusing the medication. Yes, we are expanding our diagnostic criteria but we are also becoming much better at making the correct diagnosis and monitoring patients for compliance.

It is also important to mention that a number of patients with ADHD have co-morbid psychiatric illnesses. It is important to monitor patients with this brain disease for other disorders like anxiety-related conditions, mood disorders and of course substance use/dependence disorders. After all, a good practitioner has to recognize that many adults may choose to use the calming affects of alcohol or marijuana as opposed to those medications prescribed by their psychiatrist.

Thanks for stopping by the blog. By the way, have you purchased my book yet at www.askdro.com. I would certainly appreciate your support!

Eighty-three year old, longtime “700 Club” television host, Pat Robertson is officially off his rocker. The veteran TV host has received heavy criticism for his comments in the past on controversial topics but his latest insight on cheating has thrown us over the moon. Robertson basically told a woman that inquired to the show on how to forgive her cheating spouse that “men have a tendency to wander” and to focus on the things he does right like being nice to the kids and providing you with food and shelter…wait, WHAT?

Yes, after Pat made this absurd statement, I was floored. First off, he’s pretty much telling women and wives to simply accept the fact that men cheat and to just get over it, like he just forgot to get you flowers for Valentine’s day or something. Yes, it’s been proven that men have greater numbers in the infidelity department than women but cheating is not something that just comes natural and should be expected upon entering a relationship. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous (Hebrews 13:4). There is such a thing as self control and I know the Lord to be a keeper and if you’re serious about keeping your family together and have committed that thing unto him, he’ll keep you and that rowdiness down below.

Second, I have a problem with the nonchalant way Pat addressed the issue of infidelity (sounds like he may have been a bit of a rolling stone back in the day) and how he sort of indirectly blamed the woman for the man committing adultery by saying a “woman should make a home so wonderful that he’s doesn’t want to wander”. Now you’re just adding fuel to the fire Pat. First you imply that it’s normal for men to “wander” then you imply that it’s the woman’s job to ensure that it doesn’t happen? It may be time to retire Pat Robertson.

Pat, the 700 Club is a respected show of believers where viewers call in for advice, words of encouragement and prayer and you basically tell the world on national TV that you condone cheating? I’m sure the woman that wrote to the show about her husband’s affair wasn’t expecting to hear you tell her” to focus on the good things”, “touch his face” to reconnect and ” to thank God that you’re in a marriage that’s together and you live in America where good things are happening”. So people should give thanks for marriages filled with deceit and wandering spouses? But as long as your still together it’s fine, right?

Cheating is not okay and should not be taken lightly nor should it be expected or accepted by anyone. As a Christian based show, Robertson’s answer should have been Word based and the Word clearly says that “Thou shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14) not that “men have a tendency to wander” so it’s okay if they do. I was really disappointed that Pat gave excuses as to why men cheat instead of simply saying it was wrong and coaching the inquiring wife on how to properly forgive and move on.

Pat, I’m concerned. If this is the caliber of advice you’re adhering to these days, I may have to start a petition to have you taken off the air.

Enough said,

This post goes out to all you lovers out there that meet in hotel rooms, parked cars, behind buildings, at restaurants, in church, parks or anywhere else the person you’re cheating on won’t be! The term secret lovers, already has a negative connotation, so if you’re love or lover is a secret, it’s most likely because it was wrong from the beginning like you falling in love with your brother-in-law or betraying your mom by cheating with your step dad, (yes, I said step-dad).

Now, cheating is bad in every sense, but secret lovers are more often times than not, kept secret because the lovers involved have gotten together within a group of people who already have close ties. Remember when the trashy show “Jerry Springer” was popular (and yes it’s still being aired)? Many times guests would come on the show to reveal to a loved one that they have been cheating on them with their cousin, best-friend, sister, brother, aunt, uncle and sometimes even their parents. Upon hearing this, it’s not hard to imagine what happened next, which was a lot of screaming, crying , yelling and then charging to initiate a fight scene that was somewhat similar to that of the “Mortal Combat” movie lol.

According to Infidelity Facts, 17 percent of men and women have admitted to emotional and or psychical cheating with a brother or sister-in-law. Infidelity Facts also reported that 74 percent of men and 68 percent of women would cheat if they knew they could get away with it and that the average affair lasts up to two years.

Isn’t it amazing how many people would chose to do wrong? I just read an article the other day in Ebony Magazine, about Tina Campbell, of popular Gospel music group MaryMary, revealing that her husband and father to her five kids, Teddy Campbell, cheated on her with a family friend.

Read the clip of her reaction from Black Media Scoop:

Once I became aware [of the affair], I initially wanted to kill my husband,” she admitted. I was considering adjusting the will, the living trust and all that kind of stuff. I did physically try to stab him. Several times…I never got to the point of physical harm, not really, but my words…My words hurt.

An extreme reaction like attempting to kill your husband after learning of his infidelity, is understandable considering that the two of you vowed to stay together, and only “be” with each other until death do you part. But, marriage vows also include partners promising to be there for each other no matter what, through the good, bad, and ugly and cheating is a part of many couple’s ugly phase, so with that being said, Tina said in the article that she has forgiven her husband.

If you’re truly in love (like Tina said) and you want to make it work, relationships do have the potential to survive cheating. It won’t be an easy process and the trust may take a while to regenerate but over time it can be restored.

Here are a few ways to determine if your partner/spouse has a secret lover:

Your partner now has a new and odd work schedule (different work hours than before, causing them to be away from home and with that other chick)

They declare they just want “some me time”.

They become irritable when asked about their whereabouts.

They leave the room when talking on the phone.

I hope this post was helpful, and to all you secret lovers out their, come on out into the light because it will shine on you eventually anyway.

Okay, now I know many of us may us the term “crazy” fairly loosely but there are actually people who have some crazed behaviors that are not all that easy to understand or pin down with a diagnosis. These actions may include speaking in different voices/accents, hearing voices, acting out of character, anxiety, confusion and even self-mutilation. So with that being said, let’s identify what multiple personality disorder is.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a “dissociative disorder involving a disturbance of identity in which two or more separate and distinct personality states (or identities) control the individual’s behavior at different times”.

I’ll try to set up a scenario for you. I know a lot of people like to claim that their boss is crazy so let’s apply the description of MPD to your boss. Normally, on a good day, your boss seems to be pretty meek and timid. During this time, she doesn’t yell, breath down your neck about reports or try to micro-manage. Basically, you do your job and she does hers with no interference.

But wait, now that you think about it, you’ve noticed that her behavior isn’t consistent and those good days are actually far and between. Sometimes you hear her speaking with an English accent and you know for a fact that she’s from Cleveland, Ohio. You can’t really figure out her style because one day she’s wearing designer suits, expensive jewelry with her hair done and the next she’s a tomboy complete with dirty jeans and lack of femininity. Or maybe you’ve even noticed that sometimes she can’t recall conversations she’s had with you or instructions that she’s given you when asked to complete a task. You simple brush it off by saying “this lady crazy” but if all these signs prove true, your office may have a real problem on their hands and so does she, considering that many people with MPD/DID are not even aware they have it.

What’s so interesting about MPD, is the fact that it physically involves one person but that one body and according to NAMI, is comprised of anywhere from two to 100 personalities, all with different behaviors, likes/dislikes, mannerisms, attitudes and even speech! These personalities aka “alters” “may even differ in “physical” properties such as allergies, right-or-left handedness, or the need for eyeglass prescriptions”. Think about it as all your “crazy” family members rolled into one!

According to AllPsych, the main personalities/alters associated with MPD/DID are a “depressed and exhausted host, a strong, angry protector, hurt or scared child, a helper and an internal persecutor who blames the alters for abuse that has happened to them”.

While there is no cure, treatments for MPD/DID include “primarily of psychotherapy with hypnosis” where the therapist will try to build rapports with the alters and eventually coach them into merging into one personality.

As reported by NAMI:

The therapist seeks to make contact with as many alters as possible and to understand their roles and functions in the patient’s life. In particular, the therapist seeks to form an effective relationship with any personalities that are responsible for violent or self-destructive behavior, and to curb this behavior. The therapist seeks to establish communication among the personality states and to find ones that have memories of traumatic events in the patient’s past. The goal of the therapist is to enable the patient to achieve breakdown of the patient’s separate identities and their unification into a single identity.

After reading this post, I hope you gained a better understanding about one of the many mental diseases that plague our world today. Just like all the others, MPD/DID needs to evaluated and diagnosed by a licensed professional (as MPD/DID is often misdiagnosed as Schizophrenia or Bipolar disorder) and treated accordingly.

The scripture states, ” Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of the same is; but exhorting one another: and so much more, as ye see the day. Hebrews 10:25 KJV

Now I have never strayed away from controversial topics and today shalt not be any different. Here is the questiom, “I s church membership/attendance required to make heaven?” Now of course, if you are a non-believer, you can still read this post an just indulge. This is becoming a real debate amongst the saints. (or church-goers) Many are just tired of the politics, extra offerings and church scandals. It appears that every week something new comes up that could shatter your faith. Now, I must provide a disclaimer early, I am convinced that a personal relationship with God is important, but not quite resolved on the question at hand.

Now, I am convinced that a daily prayer, meditation, and scripture reading is required for spiritual growth and development, but what does one do when his/her church has loss its focus. If church was working for a number of us, why is the rates if suicide and depression increasing in the churches. I myself just can’t do the special days anymore. I would rather sit in a nice movie day in the middle of winter. I don’t mind giving honor to whom honor is due, but when we start honoring man more than God it is a problem. How many of us can truly say that our church is involved in real ministry? How many of us can truly say that our church has retired the building fund committee? It just appears that many of the 21st century church are stuck. Now, you may challenge me on this one but let me give you just a few facts;

Most of us have changed our church membership in the last five years, at least once. LOL

Most of us have a favorite televangelist. (Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes, etc.)

Most of us are or have boycotted a Building Fund program.

Most of us ar sick of the same old church rhetoric.

Most of us have taken a Sunday morning off to visit another church/assembly.(Not to include bedside baptist)

Now that are a couple of perfect church members that probably never complain, but I am sure you have high blood pressure. So I need to hear from you on this hot and trending topic…Is Church Attendace Required to Get to Heaven?

Thanks for stopping by,

According to Media Take Out Tyler Perry’s Male companion outed him and then shortly after he received stitches Apparently this is the season for “Outing Your Friends”. Walter Hampton has not only shocked the black gay community but as well as the world. Walter released a 16 minute video on YouTube dragging Tyler through the mud for turning his back to the black gay community. Walter stated that he met Tyler years ago and he was a very flamboyant gay man. Walter feels that Tyler “straightened up” so he could maintain his large black church following. Who Tyler may feel he will lose if openly gay.

Courtesy of Media Takeout Website

Courtesy of Media Take Out Website

This, if a stunt for fame, is probably one of the most low down things a person could do. I am curious to see or hear what Tyler’s response will be to the accusations. This is a law suit waiting to happen for deformation of character and slander. I hope this guy Walter is “lawyered up”. Because if he thought a little backyard brawl was all he had coming for him, I am sure there is more to follow.

Tyler Perry is not only financially capable of handling any bad publicity but also very influential. I am sure he has the resources to deal with this matter accordingly. It is not Tyler that I am worried about.

After you watch the video let me know what your thoughts are. Is Tyler gay? Do you really care if he is or isnt? After watching this YouTube video will you continue to go see his movies? I am definitely going to have to add this topic to my next addition of “Am I in a Bad Relationship”. Topic: “What to do when my gay lover outs me”

Enough Said.
