I honestly worry about this generation sometimes. Jay Harris has dreams of becoming the next overnight rap sensation and therefore opted out of his college education opportunity. I’m not one to crush anyone’s dreams but if you were an elite high school football player who got offered to play college ball with scholarship money, wouldn’t you at least try it out? This Jay kid kind sort of turned down/ got his offer snatched back by the school after they reviewed his Youtube videos featuring him rapping explicitly. By the way, this kid cannot rap. His beat is whack, his flow is off and his lyrics are simple and predictable. Young sir, I think it’s safe to say that you are not the next Jay Z.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Harris contacted his then future school, Michigan State, to tell his coaches that he would not be joining the team after all. Apparently his school was already skeptical after they reviewed his material ahead of time and were ready to dismiss him anyway. “John Lewandowski, Michigan State’s associate athletic director/communications who confirmed the news”, said that the choice to not work with Harris was mutual. Michigan State thought Harris’ lyrics are “quite explicit in his raps, oftentimes smoking marijuana and mentioning drugs, women and homosexuals” ( which is really nothing out of the ordinary from any other rapper out there).

Now I know that there are plenty of people that have been successful without the aid of a college degree BUT I don’t think it was necessarily good for Harris to close his window of opportunity before he ever got to feel the breeze from it. I understand that people have to follow their dreams but I refuse to believe that every young Black males’ dream in America is to become a rapper or professional athlete (its beside my point but Harris was already on the road to one but he cut himself short lol). I’m convinced that this is a fad that has yet to blow over. Nowadays, I know everyone thinks they can just make a YouTube video, go viral and become a sensation over night but that doesn’t happen for everyone and this kid, well, I just don’t see it for him.

I think that everyone should peruse what’s in their hearts but I want the Black community to know that you don’t have to be in the music, entertainment or sports industry in order to be successful. I’m a successful Black man with my own business and practice and I’d like to think that I’m doing pretty well for myself (pats self on back). Sure, a rap career may get you on the fast tract to money but at least make sure you’re talented enough to sustain yourself especially if you’ve turned something down in place of it.

As Black people, especially our males, the odds are already stacked against us in more ways than one. America is the land of opportunity but it’s also the land filled with loop-holes, racism and corruption and a lot of times its more challenging for members of the Black community to navigate through those obstacles. With that being said, and not to imply that Harris was in need or poverty stricken but why would slap away a hand that’s extended to help and better you and your future?

I would personally choose college over a rap career any day because of the knowledge and skill sets learned there that I would and should if you’re committed to learning, obtain. If someone wants to do music that’s great but a career is not guaranteed and there’s no safety net to fall back on like the options a college degree opens up.

Anyway, that’s my take on the matter but what do you think? Should Jay Harris have taken his football scholarship or based on the video, do you think he has a successful rap career ahead?

According to Media Take Out Tyler Perry’s Male companion outed him and then shortly after he received stitches Apparently this is the season for “Outing Your Friends”. Walter Hampton has not only shocked the black gay community but as well as the world. Walter released a 16 minute video on YouTube dragging Tyler through the mud for turning his back to the black gay community. Walter stated that he met Tyler years ago and he was a very flamboyant gay man. Walter feels that Tyler “straightened up” so he could maintain his large black church following. Who Tyler may feel he will lose if openly gay.

Courtesy of Media Takeout Website

This, if a stunt for fame, is probably one of the most low down things a person could do. I am curious to see or hear what Tyler’s response will be to the accusations. This is a law suit waiting to happen for deformation of character and slander. I hope this guy Walter is “lawyered up”. Because if he thought a little backyard brawl was all he had coming for him, I am sure there is more to follow.

Tyler Perry is not only financially capable of handling any bad publicity but also very influential. I am sure he has the resources to deal with this matter accordingly. It is not Tyler that I am worried about.

After you watch the video let me know what your thoughts are. Is Tyler gay? Do you really care if he is or isnt? After watching this YouTube video will you continue to go see his movies? I am definitely going to have to add this topic to my next addition of “Am I in a Bad Relationship”. Topic: “What to do when my gay lover outs me”

Update: Well guys, it looks like the media jumped the gun on this one. Seems like Jaden wants to be a kid living off the good of the land for a long time. He’s not going anywhere, there’s no emancipation. Will was only joking. Check out the video for his explanation from his interview with “Ellen” today.

OKAY!!!.. . I have heard it all, today. Jaden, 14 years old, Will and Jada Smith’s oldest child together wants to be emancipated from his parents. Both Jaden and younger sister Willow have followed in the footsteps of their parents. Pursuing star studded roles in the entertainment industry. Ranging from playing lead roles in box office hit movies to singing and recording with some of the industries leading artist. These kids are definitely on the move. Their recent success as child entertainers has not been stunted in anyway. They continue to succeed in all avenues of their life, thanks to their parents. So it shocked me to hear, 14 year old, Jaden state he would like to be emancipated from his parents. Who is raising who is the question?

Courtesy of Black Media Scoop

This news was released in a recent interview in British Tabloid The Sun0 of Will Smith. Will stated as a gift for his upcoming 15th Birthday in July that he wanted to live in his own place. Will does not come off as a push over type of parent. So I am hoping he addressed this innocent request with the appropriate response. Will stated that he raised his children with the option to make their own decisions. So he understands the backlash that may come with this parenting style. But does warns his children of the consequences of their decisions. It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds.

Let me know what you think about this hot topic. Should Will and Jada allow their son to raise himself and figure out the consequence of life on his own? Or should the put a stop to this foolishness ahead of time?

Enough Said,

Dr. O

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of civil rights-era leader Malcolm X who died Thursday in Mexico City. The suspects, who work at a bar Shabazz visited, face charges of homicide and robbery. According to recent media reports Malcolm Shabazz was beaten to death in Mexico City, Mexico. He died from the injuries on the way to the hospital. The robbers attempted to Rob him and he resisted so they beat him. Malcolm Shabazz was the son of the second daughter of Malcolm X. You may remember him in the news when he was a child. He was arrested and plead guilty to arson in June of 1997. He was about 13 years old at the time of the incident. He set his grandmother Betty Shabazz apartment on fire while she was sleep. She suffered from extreme burns and after 3 weeks of staying in the intensive care unit in a hospital in Yonkers, NY she died at the age of 63. Malcolm Shabazz was convicted and sentenced to 18 mos in a Juvenile Detention Center. Throughout his life he would continue to have legal issues. Convictions ranging from destruction of property to robbery.

Terrie M. Williams, a Mount Vernon native who now runs the Terrie Williams Agency in New York City, has worked closely with the Shabazz family and confirmed the man’s death via Twitter.

According to his blog, which was last updated on May 2, Shabazz had been traveling the United States and elsewhere, speaking about the “struggles that confront this generation.” According to the site, which features a number of personal photographs, Shabazz also was working on a book.

Shabazz, also according to his blog, had not completely steered clear of law enforcement, even in his later years. As recently as February, he had run-ins with an FBI counter-terrorism unit, which, he claimed, had been investigating him for some time.

Malcolm felt he was under investigation by the FBI. He felt like he was being harassed as he stated in a recent blog post on his blog site http://malcolmshabazz.blogspot.com/ Click to read more as he goes into details.

Ladies, you ever catch your man in a lie? Or suspect some foul play after hours? If you ask him a direct question and he fumbles for the answer, he purposefully avoids eye content when talking to you or his timeline doesn’t match up, look out for a growing nose on his face because it will appear any second with the fountain of lies he’s currently drowning in. Check out my top ten lies from least to greatest, that men tell from little white lies to those unbelievably fabricated stories he’s made up to throw you off track.

10. She is my sister.

Ladies you have to question a man that has a whole lot of God-Sisters and Play Sisters. This is an old but nasty trick. Sister can mean a whole lot of things including a bedtime partner, if you know what I mean. The next time he tries that, ask him to see some family portraits.

9. That’s just my “baby mama.” What does that really mean? You might just be a fool if you allow your man to keep going over there for extended periods of time to see his child. Yes, you want him to have a relationship with his children, but probably NOT with his baby’s momma. Old ties never die and don’t you forget it!

8. I went to church last night. Unless he is sanctified that is usually a lie. Truth be told most holiness churches have stopped having multiple services during the week. It could be because of the recession. Gas and light is sort of high. Don’t let the devil fool you. Invite yourself to Bible Study with him one night. How bout it!

7. I did not have any gas to come over yesterday. If he can get to work, he can get his sorry you-know-what over to your house to change your oil. Listen for some of those excuses that just don’t make sense. He may be just using you for an occasional booty-call. What is worse you may just be doing the same. Require commitment and loyalty.

6. I laid down and when I woke-up it was just too late. We really like telling this lie. I was oh so tired. I just couldn’t make it out of bed. I woke-up this morning with my work clothes on from last night. If this is true-he probably stinks and let him stay at home. Otherwise, tell that brother to wake-up and take you out to dinner.

5. I had to do overtime. If he is doing overtime, make sure that he spends some of that money on you. Drive-by his job if it will decrease your anxiety. However, you must be prepared if his car is not in THAT parking lot. Overtime should equal more cash flow to you! How bout it!

4. I am NOT gay! If he gets too defensive when you ask this question-be convinced. Ladies most of you know a brother that loves other brothers. You cannot change him. You can try, but it may be pretty hard. If you decide to move forward with the relationship don’t be surprised we he can’t function sexually. You knew what he liked before you married. Can a leopard change his spots? Only if he truly wants too.

3. I LOVE You. If these words come out too early be AWARE! People can play on your emotions if you are NOT careful. To love you, I must know you. Enough said!

2. I had to do something for my mother/sister.O.K.? What did you have to do? Start your interrogatories. If you let him get away with one lie, he will continue throughout the relationship. Stop it early.

1. I ain’t lying!-If he has to say it, he most probably is, enough said.

Now you really need to get my ebook, “Am I in a Bad Relationship?” I am sure that it will be helpful. Just click on the link to go to the landing page.

Is this list complete? Did I leave out some of your favorites? Which one do you think is most popular? Does your boyfriend tell lies? Let me hear from you? Brothers keep your hats on, The Top Ten Lies Women Tell is on the way!

This post is dedicated to all me readers who have loss their mom.

There is a happy weekend for some, but for many they dread it like the plague. Each year when those of us with mother’s are out celebrating, they are at home usually fighting back the tears laced with pain. I would like to share with those of you who have loss your mom, crying is ALWAYS appropriate. In most cases, this was the first and probably closest relationship many of us will ever have in this lifetime. This catharsis is needed and an annual flood is alright and sometimes therapeutic. Do what you need to do to survive this Sunday. I can’t share personally in your experience because my mother is still here with me. However, I have treated a number of patients whim it takes several years to shake-it. If you never come back to this blog remember, “The depth of the grief is directly proportional to the depth of the relationship. Break it down for us Dr.O. What I am saying is, “If you and mom were close, then it is going to take some time. However, rest assured you will make it and God shall wipe away all of your tears.

Now many of you may ask, “How can I make it through another sad Mother’s Day?” I am going to share the answer after I highlight a couple of things for you.

Your mother is technically the first person to know of your being

Your mother is the first person that could most probably feel and relate to your pain

Your mother believed in you when no one else would

No one’s touch feels/felt like your mother’s touch and

It was just something about her voice that could remove all of your doubts/pain.

Now that we have had a moment to reflect back on a “Mother’s Love,” I have to ask you a couple of questions? Have you began replacing those painful memories of your mom’s last days with the fond memories of when y’all had good times? Have you stopped beating up yourself because you did not visit as much as you should? Have you forgiven yourself for that last little falling-out that you may have had? Have you forgiven yourself because you never returned her tupperware that she put those fresh collards in on Sunday? Have you forgiven yourself for not saying, “Mom I Love You” enough while she was here. Take this weekend to declare out loud, “Mom I love you and I really miss your touch.” Guess what, mom knew you wouldn’t return those dishes. It made her glad to have a part of her in your home. Moreover, guess what mom told me to tell you that ‘You were her favorite.” Take this weekend to smile, reflect, laugh and cry and enjoy the wonderful memories that you have of your mother.

Now I want to share some practical tips to make it through the weekend.

Purchase some of mom’s favorite fresh flowers and put them in your home.

Try to bake/cook one her favorite or secret recipes that she taught you.

Pull out that scrap book and look at those famous holidays and recall her smiles.

Visit, if you can handle it, her final resting place.

Things I don’t want you to do this weekend.

Isolate all weekend from family and friends.

Drink excessive alcohol or over-eat the entire weekend.

Scroll through every stores “Mother’s Day cards.

Get angry with God because he choose that beautiful flower, “your mother.”

If you have siblings, get together with them if at all possible. If you are an only child, hang out with a few close friends. And for God’s Sake, “Answer your cell-phone Sunday!” Remember we care about you and God loves you also.

P.S. If you need some laughter after reading this click here.

Take care and be strong this weekend,

DrO
